New Post: PLK Verification

I cannot get my package to install. Even creating an EMPTY package with basic information, then obtaining a PLK from Microsoft -- every time it fails! I understand that ther cannot be any typos in the information when getting the PLK.

What can possibly be wrong?

Perhaps I am taking the wrong steps when using this toolset.

I tried to install the VSSDK Assist package, but it requires VB. I don't use VB, and I don't want to install it just for this
Why is there a dependency on VB? Is it just because there are some VB templates? Should this then not be split up into two packages (VB & C#)?

Is there an API for adding new 'templates'?

For example, I have a basic pattern that I use for adding new ProjectProperties pages to Flavored Projects - and it would be nice to have this as a template wizard within VSSDKAssist...

Hi,
Are there any docs or tutorials beyond the basic screenshots here (and on the old VSIPFactory) that explain how to do things like creating toolwindows etc? I read the Code Mag VSX Focus edition and tried to follow along and create a toolwindow. But the toolwindow does not appear. The screenshots in the mag article also dont show a couple of important things such as what to choose for the docking option and the visibility option. For the docking option the final GUID is shown (which IMO defeats one of the aims of this tool which is to avoid us having to poke around command tables for the GUID values).

I understand the GAT approach , recipes etc and that this tool is supposed to make things easier when developing with the SDK but my guess is it presupposes a knowledge of the SDK itself before attempting to use this. I had to do a number of steps (create, configure, register etc) but to no avail. In contrast , the SDK wizard creates a fully functioning toolwindow with menu item etc with much less effort than this package. Of course, this gives you more options on where to dock, visibility options etc but in the absence of docs or pointers to docs, it doesnt seem to help much.

Maybe its just me :-(

Hi Pablo,
I just created a toolwindow project and got a CTC fatal error saying that it couldnt start the preprocessor. I looked up this error and found that apparently you do need VC++.

First of all thanks for creating these tools, I think they should make the vsx learning experience easier.

I'm having problems after using the VSSDK Assist to create custom projects.
The first time I launch the project in debug mode, it builds without errors and successfully launches my isolated shell
with a new vspackage/custom project added with vssdk assist.

The problem is when I attempt to later rebuild my solution, the following pops up on the output and later in the error list:

I was wondering if I am doing something wrong and if anyone else has seen this.
I wanted to check here before entering an issue about this.

My System:
Windows XP SP3
Visual Studio Team System 2008 9.0.21022.8 RTM
Visual Studio 2008 SDK 1.0 CTP
Guidance Automation Extensions February 2008
VSSDK Assist March 2008 CTP release

My steps:

Created a new Project -> Visual Studio Shell Isolated (C++ only)
Enabled the guidance package manager->VS Shell Assist, VSSDK Assist
Added a Visual studio Integration package (Other project types->Extensibility)
Added the package created in step 3 to the shell dependencies
Built the solution/project
Right clicked on the added package VS SDK Assist->Create->Custom Project -> Create Custom Project .
Launched the project by clicking the play button (also automatically built the project in debug mode)
Stopped the project.
In vs2008 Selected the top level solution and right click Rebuild Solution.

Is it possible to add a VsTemplateLanguage element in the generated project file for custom project?

Therefore ZipItem and ZipProject action can generate tempate zips into correct folder.

Thanks for releasing March CTP. We have been waiting it for our projects.

When creating custom project, by default the wizrad prompted ".myproj" as the file extension of the project. If using ".myproj", VSSDK Assist will add another dot. The generated code looks like:

[ProvideProjectFactory(typeof(VsPackage1.CustomProjects.MyProjectFactory), "My Project", "My Project Files (*..myproj);*..myproj", ".myproj", ".myproj", null, LanguageVsTemplate = "MyProject", NewProjectRequireNewFolderVsTemplate = true)]

I am having the same problem. I can see that the VSPackage for VS SDK Assist is loading properly but somehow the GAX is not working with it. What must be done to register the VS SDK Assist with GAX ?

I know I have the prereqs installed because I can use the core GAX recipes and the Web Services Software Factory: Modeling Edition. I am running this on WinXP and there were no errors during the installation.

I have the latest GAX release installed - and ran the VSSDK Assist installer (which succeeded), but VSSDK Assist doesn't show up in the Guidance Package Manager's Enable/Disable Packages dialog.

I'm running Visual Studio Team System 2008 (RTM) and VSSDK Assist 1.0 does show up in the Help/About dialog.

Posted this comment on the pre-requisites page before realizing it should be here...

I have just installed the May07 CTP (Im using VS 2005 Team Suite on XP) . I have C# and VB installed but do i need VC++ to create/compile the VS Packages built using this tool?

If you need to integrate a VS Package with a VS Shell Isolated application you can read my post about that:

Also you can download the Storyboard designer, that is a working sample of a VS Shell Isolated application:

I read this. So apparently, the generated code and the generated registry information are correct. The problem however, is that when compiling the solution, VS looks for the VSTemplate subkey in **HKCU**\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\AppEnv\9.0\Apps\TestShell_5678bb36-7c85-45f6-842a-5ef6973b6ecb\**Configuration**\VSTemplate. That's the problem.

Let's start from the begining. :)
You don't need to change the DefaultRegistryRoot attribute. This is only applicable for VS Packages.
If you need to integrate a VS Package with a VS Shell Isolated application you can read my post about that:
